FUNCTIONS AND INGREDIENTS
American Ginseng, also known as Panax quinquefolium, is considered to be an adaptogenic herb and well regarded for its invigorating and energizing properties. While most commonly used as a tonic to support normal stress response, it is also thought to be able to play supportive roles in healthy blood sugar metabolism.
Guarana Max-V contains 100 mg of guarana seed and 100 mg of herbal extract standardized to provide 12.5 mg of caffeine. The applicable part of guarana is the seed. Guarana contains 3.6% to 5.8% caffeine; compared to 1% to 2% in coffee. Caffeine is responsible for the pharmacologic effects of guarana. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), heart, muscles, and possibly the centers that control blood pressure. Caffeine also decreases airway resistance and stimulates respiration. Caffeine stimulates the secretion of stomach acid, and increases plasma catecholamine levels. Caffeine''s CNS stimulant effects are thought to improve performance. With regard to exercise, caffeine has been shown to decrease perceived levels of exertion, which enables exercises and athletes to feel less tired, enhance muscle metabolism and increase the time it takes to exhaustion, leading to an increase in performance. Caffeine may be beneficial in supporting heart health. It also increases resting energy expenditure (REE) and cellular thermogenesis, enhancing fat loss and weight loss.
Coenzyme Q-10 (or ubiquinone) is an important rate-limiting nutrient that is a cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the biochemical pathway in cellular respiration from which adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and metabolic energy is derived. Since nearly all cellular activities are dependent upon energy, coenzyme Q-10 is essential for the health of all human tissues and organs. Coenzyme Q-10 is a naturally-occurring antioxidant nutrient which slows down free radical formation in biological systems. Biochemically, coenzyme-Q10 functions much like vitamin E in that it participates in antioxidant and free radical reactions. Healthy humans who consume a well-balanced diet have the ability to manufacture coenzyme Q-10. Unhealthy individuals and those on an inadequate diet may not synthesize coenzyme Q-10 in sufficient quantity. The biosynthesis of coenzyme Q-10 in the human body requires a good diet – one that is high in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrient factors. It has been shown by NHANES’ studies that many North Americans do not have an adequate diet. Rather, their intake of most water-soluble vitamins, vitamin A and some minerals and trace elements is insufficient. Many of these nutrients are essential for the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q-10. In addition, it has been shown that in disease states, nutrients from food sources may not necessarily be absorbed or available. According to some experts, coenzyme Q-10 should be considered an essential nutrient, as it is well established that coenzyme Q-10 is essential for the health of every cell in the human body. L-Taurine, is an abundant free amino acid in the body that provides protection to biological membranes against lipid peroxidation. This protects cells from abnormal calcium ion or water entry which can occur as a result of lipid peroxidation. Taurine lends its protective ability to oxidant-sensitive tissues - such as the retina - where it helps protect visual cells from light induced oxidative damage. The cell stabilizing effect of taurine is also important in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle, and heart, where it is found in the highest concentrations.

As co-enzymes, the B vitamins are essential components in most major metabolic reactions. They play an important role in energy production, including the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. B vitamins are also important for blood cells, hormones, and nervous system function. As water-soluble substances, B vitamins are not generally stored in the body in any appreciable amounts (with the exception of vitamin B-12). Therefore the body needs an adequate supply of B vitamins on a daily basis. Thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin are all essential coenzymes in energy production. Vitamin B-6 dependent enzymes are also needed for the biosynthesis of many neurotransmitters, including serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid are coenzymes in DNA and RNA metabolism. Both of these B vitamins assist in homocysteine metabolism. Folic acid serves as a methyl donor and vitamin B-12 as a coenzyme in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine.
Biotin and pantothenic acid are also coenzymes essential for energy production from dietary fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Pantothenic acid is a component of coenzyme A and of phosphopantetheine, and is therefore essential for Krebs cycle operation. Biotin is involved in many carboxylation reactions associated with gluconeogenesis, the Krebs cycle, and fatty acid synthesis. While not truly vitamins, choline, inositol, and paraaminobenzoic acid are important nutrients related to B vitamins. Choline serves as a methyl donor for homocysteine metabolism following conversion to betaine, as a structural component of cellular membranes as phosphatidylcholine, and as a neurotransmitter as acetylcholine. Inositol aids in the cellular response to hormonal signals, serves as a source of arachidonic acid, and is active in cellular membranes as phoshatidylinositol. Finally, paraaminobenzoic acid has antioxidant properties.
