So, which one is appropriate? Well, depression is a mental condition rather than a mental disease. There are so many mental diseases that are accompanied by depression. In fact, almost all mental diseases are characterized by a form of depression. Thus, any depression cure depends on the condition within which depression manifests. However, there are several known depression cures. Those recommended by National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) fall within two broad categories:Clinical cures for depressionNon-clinical cures for depressionClinical cures for depressionThis refers to depression treatment options that are administered at a depression treatment center. Any clinical cure for depression falls within two categories;Medical cureNon-medical cureMedical curesMedical cures include various types of anti-depressants. Antidepressants work on neurotransmitters mainly norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. Scientists have discovered that they are effective in regulating mood swings but they have not yet ascertained how they do achieve this. The following are common clinical treatments dispensed at various depression treatment centers as recommended by NIMH;MAOIsTryclicsNewer AntidepressantsMAOIs – (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are the oldest known antidepressants. Tryclics – these are an older type of depressants that include imipramine and nortriptyline. However, they are rarely used to their serious side effects especially on those with heart conditions. They are also known to cause dizziness, drowsiness, weight gain and dry mouth. Newer Antidepressants – these are the modern and more effective antidepressants. They include SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors).Non-medical curesBrain stimulation therapies are the most widely used non-medical clinical cures for depression. There are three main types of brain stimulation therapies;electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)vagus nerve stimulation (VNS)repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)ECT is the commonest brain stimulation therapy administered by most depression treatment centers. This therapy involves use of electric impulses to stimulate brain function. VNS is done by implanting a pulse generator under the skin that sends electrical pulses through the left vagus nerve (half of a prominent pair of nerves that run from the brainstem through the neck and down to each side of the chest and abdomen). rTMS works like ECT but unlike ECT, it uses magnetic pulses instead of electric pulses to stimulate the brain.Non-clinical cures for depressionThere are depression treatments that do not require one to visit any clinical depression treatment center.
